Below, please select the lesson you'd like to start with. The files are compressed in (.rar) format. You will need a program like WinRar or WinZip to extract them. Upon extraction, you'll access SPSS data files with a .sav extension. To open these data files, you'll need the SPSS program.


Lesson 1: Getting Started: Getting to Know SPSS

In this lesson, you can gain a general understanding of the SPSS program. You'll learn about its operational system, basic structure, the purpose of variable and data screens, and what kind of information is entered into these sections.


Before starting the lesson, you can download the following data and practice along.




Lesson 2: Data Entry and Preprocessing

This lesson covers data entry into SPSS using an example survey. You'll gain practical knowledge on coding the survey, creating variable names and descriptions, importing data into SPSS, and conducting preliminary edits on variables.


Before starting the lesson, you can download the data from the previous session and the data file in Excel format provided below.



Lesson 3: Reverse Coding

In this lesson, we cover how reverse coding can be performed as part of the preparations before analysis. You'll learn practical information about what reverse coding is, why it's done, and how it's executed.


If you'd like to practice together, you can continue with the data from the previous lesson. If you are starting the series from this particular lesson, you should download the data labeled 'Lesson 3' provided below.



Lesson 4: Calculating Scale Scores

In this lesson, we explain how scale scores are calculated and how variables related to these scores are added to the dataset if the research involves a scale. You can practically learn the SPSS commands used for this purpose.
